Testing of PSVs in Steam Service

Testing of PSVs in Steam Service

Testing of PSVs in Steam Service

(OP)
Hello,

While PSVs in Hydro carbon services are permitted to be shop tested using Compressed Air or Nitrogen, why Steam valves are not permitted to be tested the same way? Why PSVs in steam service necessiraly to be tested with steam as test medium or in-service tested after installation at site?

If service temperature vis-a-vis ambient temperature is the reason, we have temperature corrections in CDTP. At the same time, high temperature hydrocarbon service PSVs do not mandate in-service testing again after cleared from bench testing.

Or is it something related to mass flow rate (lb/hr or Kg/hr)?

Could any one clarify on above or lead me to any code references?

thanks,
ravi.

RE: Testing of PSVs in Steam Service

IMHO, it is as much due to tradition as anything else. But it sure is nice to not have to establish a bonnet & spring temperature during service, and them arrive at a CDTP.

RE: Testing of PSVs in Steam Service

I am not sure but it might be due to a Section I boiler code requirement that has then migrated to all steam PSV's.

But am no way certain about this
