Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

(OP)
When updating drawings in NX8.5 I was able to right click on the component in the Assembly Navigator then click Replace Component to swap the files. I just stared using NX 9.0 and this Replace Component command is not available in the same spot. I've added it to the Assembly tab but it does not seem to function the same way. It will not let me select the component. Is there a way to enable this function or another way to accomplish this task?

Joe

RE: Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

I see NO differences whatsoever between NX 8.5 and NX 9.0 when it comes to being able to select and replace a Component from the Assembly Navigator whether I'm working in the context of a Drawing or not.

Make sure that your Assembly's module is toggled ON.

RE: Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

What does your component's icon look like in the navigator?
In the image below, the left is when you've got a drafting component, the right is a normal component.

As you can see if it's the left, you don't get the option to replace component.
This was specifically removed from NX9. It is an ER2237169 for one of our customers.

I am trying to replace a drafting component. This was an option in NX 8.5 but has been removed from NX 9.0?!? Do you know of another command that may work? My Assembly Module is turned on.

What is an ER2237169?

RE: Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

An ER is an Enhancement Request , submitted to Siemens GTAC, the number is the id of that ER.
If you go https://support.industrysoftware.automation.siemen...
then select the Symptom/solution Information Query ( you need to have a webkey, which you can get at the same spot) you can log in and read the full request.

I wonder why this option was removed.
We often use this type of view to show scale measures / compasses etc on our drawings.

Tomas

RE: Updating NX 9.0 Drawings

We logged an IR (Incident Report) and got a working as designed.
We pushed and it's now an enhancement request.
My advice to those wanting this functionality back is to their own IRs to GTAC and ask to reference the ER number 2237169.
Here's the information we got in response to our questions:

The problem where Replace component for drafting reference component not possible has been investigated and the following has been found.
Drafting Components are not real components and not part of the product structure; therefore, they should be treated as such for all practical purpose. They are special components intended to be used only by the drafting application to facilitate the creation of views of parts and were not designed to participate in the full offering of operations that standard Assembly Components do. Replace Component was not designed to support Drafting components and the execution thereof will lead to unwanted results and unintended consequences. The fact that Replace Component was allowed up until nx853 was due to an oversight and allowing it to remain in its current state will ultimately result in errors and poor quality for many customers.
That said, the decision was made to consider this for a future release. There are far too many issues with this functionality to simply re-enable as is. Proper analysis, design and testing are required in order to support these workflows if this is something we want to provide in the future.
