Importing TIFF as raster image

Importing TIFF as raster image

(OP)
Hello,

One of mine colleagues has created warning stickers/decals in Adobe Illustrator to use on our machines we build here.
Now we want those stickers in our NX environment as an part.
He has export them as an dxf and tiff file.
DXF doesn't work well. Everything is black and letters are changed in form, and parts of the image are separate exported as PNG-file.
I can import a tiff file as a Raster Image (not a very stable process in NX) and extrude a thin sheet behind it as the material, but in the drawing the tiff image isn't visible.

How do i get the TIFF image visible in a drawing?
Or are there better ways to create a sticker image/part in NX?

(The NX file will not be used to create the stickers, so a bit less quality of the image doesn't matter.)

Thanks in advance,
Tjeerd

Thank you.
The Decal function i didn't know.
But the problem here is that you only see the image in the model mode and not in the drawing. Al tough that's not a real big problem. Placing a image in an empty drawing is good enough here.
But we need a real part with the image on it.
I tried to create a small sheet at the size of the decal and placed the decal on it. But when i insert that part in an assembly the decal isn't visible, so this won't work for us.

Hopefully someone else has a solution for us.

RE: Importing TIFF as raster image

I had the same issue some 10 years ago, i then found out that Adobe Illustrator is notorious on creating weird DXF's...
We fiddled around somewhat in Illustrator to find out how to do the export such that the DXF file became usable, and yes, it can export usable DXFs.
-as noted this was 10 years ago so i do not remember what we did in illustrator... - But, the key is Illustrator.
( at that assignment, in the end i did the DXF exports since i knew how.)

Another option you can try is using CGM files instead.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Tomas

RE: Importing TIFF as raster image

Take your tiff image, convert it to DXF using Inkscape.
Then you can import that DXF into NX and make it into solid body (or at least a sheet face) which you can use in your model.
It will then appear in a drawing.

There's a video on how to use Inkscape on our Vimeo site: https://vimeo.com/83654051

maybe check out

they will email you the conversion.
I got mine in less than 1 hour.

Thanks for all the answers.
I'm testing now with Inkscape and it seems to work fine.
The only hing i'm struggle now with is that somewhere in the conversion process the size change. But i guess that problem will be solved to.

Getting an working DXF from AI didn't work till now.

And about Zamzar, i don't like online services. I don't know what they do with my files or were they may end. I like to keep control over my own files. But thanks for the tip.

RE: Importing TIFF as raster image

Hi Anthony,

I have installed inkscape and python 3.4.2 but when I try to export in dxf I have the following message:

Then I have tried to install "lxml-3.4.0.win-amd64-py2.6" and I have the following message

Thanks in advance to say me what's wrong in my install

@Didier, I'm assuming you're using an Apple Mac?
I don't support Inkscape, but a google search brings up a few topics:

Looks like Windows dialog boxes to me...

I think the problem is that you have installed python 3.4 and the lxml wrapper is looking for python 2.6. Python versions are picky and code may not be compatible between versions.

RE: Importing TIFF as raster image

I thought the same, but I've never installed python to get Inkscape to work (don't have it installed on my system), so if it's a pre-req it must be installed by the installer.
When I googled the error, the stuff I saw was related to MacOS

Hi,

Thanks for your answers. I am using win 7 64 bits on Dell Laptop M6600.

I am going to look on inkscape forum: lxml-3.4.0 should be ok for python 3.4
