Design of Stiffener Plate

Design of Stiffener Plate

Design of Stiffener Plate

(OP)
Please see attachment.

I am trying to pick up a concrete wall with a continuous plate as shown in the image. I have designed that plate as cantilevered. But I am also going to weld stiffener plate as shown for stability at a certain spacing. My question is, is this stiffener plate design for any load? I have designed the plate to work by its self, so I do not know if the stiffener plate is till designed. If it is, for what loading?

JO

Thank You

RE: Design of Stiffener Plate

This will behave like a shelf angle for brick. The wall will tend to arch from bolt to bolt. As such, it's a good idea to put your stiffeners near your bolts and assign them a commensurate tributary load. It's not conservative to treat the bent plate as a uniformly loaded cantilever unless your bolts are quite close together.

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

I looked at shelf angle for brick example, they are very helpful thanks.

If I had stiffeners, how would I design the bend plate for bending to determine spacing of anchors?

How long is the supported wall? It's existing rather than new, right?

It is a new wall. Planning to space anchors at 24" cc. Thinking 3/8 plate with stiffeners at 24.

RE: Design of Stiffener Plate

The wall won't be cast in place will it? Precast?

It is precast

I'd recommend discrete clip angles rather than a continuous bent plate then. I'll sketch up an idea for you tomorrow morning with regard to the force in the stiffeners. Thanks for the info.

Thanks

+1 for the clip angles. We used a similar detail but for some roof steel.

This is what I had in mind Joe:

Kootk,

Using clip looks like a better idea. Even the analysis seems simpler. Thanks for the help.
