RE: elongated columns

I have not tried it on ETABS 2013 but I suppose they have not changed that procedure from previous versions.
If you want to extend a column between stories (so ETABS does NOT break it at slab level):
1.- Select the column you want to extend (I am assuming you have drawn the column in the lower level).
2.- Select the point at the top of that column (very important, don't forget this step).
3.- Select the beam on the upper level where the column from the level below will connect.
4.- In <Align Objects>, select the last option <Extend>.
5.- The column will extend from the lower level to the beam in the upper level in the direction established by the selected point in the column.
ETABS will NOT break this column at the intermediate slab level.

Hope this helps.
