NX9 visualization Preferences

NX9 visualization Preferences

(OP)
In NX9.0.3.4 Visualization Preferences. Is there a way either in Visualization Preferences or Customer Defaults to keep Faceting Resolution for 'Shaded Views' set to Fine. I have set this in Customer Defaults to Fine but in the Part file it defaults to Standard. If I save part file with Fine (Facets) set it keeps the setting, however I must set every part file in Visualization Preferences - Faceting - Fine and save in order to maintain the "Fine" setting. I would like all part files I open to be set to "Fine" in Visualization Preferences - Faceting - Shaded Views - Resolution - Fine.

Thanks,
Rick D

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

It may be that you need to update any template files accordingly

Thanks Phillpd

That was a new one on me. Did not notice that behavior prior to NX9 but
it did the trick.

Thanks,

Hi again,

That worked when creating a new part file however I would like all part files I open to be set
to Fine? Anyone know how

Thanks

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

You cannot do that - those settings are specific to the existing files themselves. However they are set once you save them is how they will open. Similar to color preferences, modeling tolerances or dimension preferences on existing parts.

If it's that big of a deal, create a macro to change all the settings you want. Keep in mind, another user may change them back.

Thanks Tim

Yes I understand. Did not notice that behavior prior to NX9? In any event I have made a VB program to change them to Fine and
assigned it to a user command button.

Thanks

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

I've been using UG/NX since v11 and it's always been that way for certain settings. Over the years, defaults/settings/preferences have been added and removed, but the underlying behavior was there.

If you're particular or in need of certain settings, get them set now so that all newly created and afterwards saved parts will have the preferences you desire. If you're in a multi-user setting, you might consider using the same settings/preferences/defaults, etc. for all users if at all possible.

Hi Tim

Thanks again.

Been using UG since V10 (manufacturing primarily) and even a little V4 early on (joystick and numbered menu buttons). In NX9 the display refinement (hexagon holes displayed) seems a little more obvious to me. It would be nice if that feature could be set in customer defaults and not have to mess with it every part file as my graphics card can handle the "Fine" setting except extremely huge part files. I guess VB to the rescue on that one.

Have good one,
Rick D

NX9 offers a new option to base the facet size on the view scale. When you zoom in to look at an individual hole feature, the display updates to use smaller facets so everything looks smoother. You might want to try out this setting, it may give better overall performance compared to setting everything to "fine" resolution.

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

Rick,

No problem - wasn't aware of your experience with UG and NX. I think cowski is on to something - I'm only on NX8, so that particular setting he's mentioning isn't applicable for me yet. Test it out and see how it behaves (whether it's specific to your permanent settings, session or individual files).

Star goes to cowski for pointing out a new setting with which to play.

Hi Guys,

Seen you both on here often and have followed many of your posts, respect to you both. Thought
I was going crazy but apparently NX9 Display behavior is changed a little. Really have not
had a graphic performance problem yet but I do prefer a smooth (round hole) display. Sometimes
you look at something and forget "it's just graphics".

Have a great day

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

Rick,

Thanks for the compliment.

I hear you - it used to take a couple of hours to get NX up and running after a migration to a new version. Unfortunately, I believe those days are gone. My employer is trying to figure out how to customize a customized environment, so we're not quite ready for our NX9 launch.

Still waiting on the cerebral interface though....just think it and NX will do it. To anyone outside of design, they've thought we've had that type of interface for decades.

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

There's a document in GTAC about this. Since it's GTAC that created it, I won't post it but here's the link to it for those with a Webkey:

I found that if you RMB on the component and Show Exact, you get nice round holes at any zoom scale.

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

Lightweight vs. exact views of components is a separate, yet related topic.

The settings discussed above apply to the tessellation of the exact geometry found in the individual part files.

Thanks Gary,

That is a related subject but yes I was referring only to individual parts and not an assembly.

RE: NX9 visualization Preferences

We had a problem with holes turning hexagon or square shaped when we moved face. We found that by going to Customer Defaults - under Gateway - Visualization - in the Faceting tab, if you check the "Align Facets Along Edges" box, it seemed to fix that. If that is what you are dealing with.
