BCA return period for hangar

Hi people.
We have a job in the NT for the design of a hangar that needs to accommodate 2 commercial jets. It has been confirmed that the hangar is not essential for post disaster function. Is importance level 4 (as per BCA) still appropriate?

Regards
Geoff

RE: BCA return period for hangar

When posting in this forum, as opposed to the specific one for AS/NZS Code issues, you should better identify the location. Many people here won't be able to decipher NT (Northern Territory) or BCA (Building Code of Australia). As to your question, who "confirmed" that? I don't know the answer, but jets are a lot more expensive than a bit more steel in the hangar.

RE: BCA return period for hangar

I think the minimum would be Importance Level 2 and require a 500yr wind. But like Hokie says, aircraft cost several million so I think it would be required by the client to use and IL3 or even IL4. I think a major airliner would actually have briefs for the structural design of their hangars.

Hi Guys - I really appreciate the feedback and the good advice!! I was however, looking for more of an "interpretation of the BCA" (in particular clause 1.2 from memory) where it discusses the types of importance levels. FYI there is no Brief and the location is just outside Darwin (Qld Australia).

Again I appreciate your help!

RE: BCA return period for hangar

I would open discussions with the client and affected parties (if the end user is different than the client) about this. If you know the minimum requirements, finding out the appropriate design category all falls within their own homeopathic risk.

Insurance rates on the aircraft could be effected by the structure they are stored in, so it might just come down to a cost-benefit analysis.
