Composite beam element

Composite beam element

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to model a beam element with 2 different materials? For example a steel tube filed with concrete.

Thank you,

Best regards

RE: Composite beam element

Yes possible

Dear Mauce52,

By beam element I meant to say "wire" element for which the available cross-section library is presented in "Analysis User's manual". It will be very helpful if you can provide any references.

Thank you

RE: Composite beam element

At a push, you could do it but you need to make sure that assumptions you adopt are appropriate and that you have implemented them correctly. The key assumptions would probably need to be along the lines of:
- you need to decide whether the materials act fully compositely or not(i.e. there is no slippage at the interface).
- the materials behave in a linear manner.
- ratio of elastic (Young's) modulus is know and is constant (and you are not too much concerned with Poisson's effects)

In that case you can assign one of the materials to the whole section in your model and calculated beam section values by scaling the areas to that material. I doubt it that you will be able to use ABAQUS profile calculator for that.
