Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

(OP)
Gentlemen,

I have two questions:

1- As can be seen in the attachment first page (pic) I have this problem.
Corroded part of projected anchor bolt.
Don't know if it needs to be repaired or not? If yes what is a solution.

2- What is the marked portion by the anchor bolt on second page (the two photos)
Thank you

RE: Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

The pdf is too poor an image to tell if the original nut is still present.

Also, what is the remaining effective dia of the anchor bolt. It looks like 1/2 original diameter? 1/4 original strength then? Maybe?

RE: Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

As that is a stiffened base connection, obviously in an industrial facility, the bolts would presumably be in tension with some load conditions, so required. But located inside the flanges like that, it is questionable how much load they were supposed to take. I would want to know the load the bolts need to take before planning any reinforcement, as a solution to inadequate capacity will not be easy.

racookpe1978, I am waiting for this info from field. Don't have it yet.

hokie66, I don't have the loads, probably I need to run a full analysis of structure to get the loads unless there is a way around it

Any body knows where I can find a similar problem solved or discussed in a book or ...

Thanks

RE: Corroded anchor bot at projected portion

A typical way to replace compromised anchor bolt is core drill around the existing anchor bolt and remove them. Then replacement anchor bolt is epoxy grouted into the cored hole. Of course you need to know thickness of the slab it is embedded in.

In your photo the anchor bolts project far above the concrete to allow an longer length of the bolt to stretch when the nuts are tightened. This extended stretching length minimizes the chance of the anchor bolt failing in tension.
