Reinforcing of existing steel beam

Reinforcing of existing steel beam

Reinforcing of existing steel beam

(OP)
I am needing to increase the load capacity of an existing steel beam. It is cantilevered over a beam, so placing a plate on the underside is not possible. Access to one side of the beam is blocked, so I cannot add anything to one side of the flange. I was planning on welding a channel to the face of the web on one side only. What might be issues with only being able to do this to one side? Thanks.

RE: Reinforcing of existing steel beam

You are producing a non-symmetrical section which requires a different analysis method. If you just need additional bending capacity my preferred detail is angles welded to both the flange and web (creating an box).

The site welders have always preferred that detail. However you still need to design for an asymmetrical section.

RE: Reinforcing of existing steel beam

What you have suggested is a common solution where there are constraints such as you describe. As Jayrod said, make sure you calculate allowable bending stress based upon an asymmetrical section.
