Applying thermic loads

Applying thermic loads

Applying thermic loads

(OP)
Hi. I attached a picture of a cross section in a pipe. I need to apply to this pipe, in abaqus, a initial temperature of 20 degrees. After that i need to study the displacements knowing that the inside of the pipe is loaded with a temperature of 300 degrees and the outside with a 200 degrees temperature load.
How do i set this types of loads in Abaqus and what finite element would you recommend me to use in this analysis?

Thank you

RE: Applying thermic loads

If you're using constant temperature boundary conditions, then you could expect the gradient at steady state to be linear and constant with angular location and axial location. That's a relatively simple analytical solution for thermal stress if that's what you're after.

RE: Applying thermic loads

Do you want the transient change in radial displacement or the steady state solution? Is the pipe infinitely long or does it have a free end which is unrestrained? In steady state the temperature distribution is roughly linear and the mean radial displacement can be calculated from the mean temperature, at say 250C, roughly. If it has a free end then the temperature gradient will cause additional radial displacement as the free ends of the pipe wall bend. You can work this out by hand from Timoshenko and Woinowsy, Theory of Plates and Shells. The transient solution will tend to this steady state solution.
