Impact testing requirements
Impact testing requirements
(OP)
Hello,
I have been reading through PD5500 to try and determine if there is a requirement to impact test the following material:
BS1501-224-490B-LT50
13mm thick dished end
The design temperature is -7degC to +70degC
I have been looking at Annex D Figure D.1 and it is unclear as the chart does not extend far enough.
Can anyone shed some light on this matter or point me in the right direction?
Cheers
Simon

RE: Impact testing requirements
BS1501-224-490B-LT50 has already been impact tested at -50degC, hence the LT50 in the designation.
Firstly you need to calculate the design reference temperature, this is not the same as the design temperature but it might end up as the same value. Use this in Annex D figure D.1 to determine the required impact test temperature. Looking at the values quoted this will be -17degC at worst case which will give an impact test temperature requirement greater than 0degC. Given you already have -50degC impact values you should be ok.
Hope this helps.
RE: Impact testing requirements
I forgot to mention that these dished ends were cold formed and then normalized which has been done post impact test.
