Silos

Silos

(OP)
I was asked why the uplift on silos is high due to wind load? Any thoughts?
Also is there any deflection limitation for top of silos? Any top displacement restriction?
Thank you

RE: Silos

The center of mass for a typical silo is well above the foundation. The overturning moment from horizontal winds will cause foundation uplift on the windward side of the foundation. One way to address the uplift is to make the foundation wider than the silo. For the silo to be wider, it will likely have to be thicker, too. This does three things:

1. Makes the foundation heavier, thereby lowering the center of mass for the silo / foundation unit.

2. Makes the foundation more stable by increasing the foundation's lever arm to resist overturning.

3. Increases the contact area with the soil, giving more space to install additional piling, drilled piers, etc. to resist uplift.

RE: Silos

The worst case for uplift (on the windward side)is when the design wind blows on an empty silo.
