cracks in the slab

cracks in the slab

cracks in the slab

(OP)
Good morning,

please somebody tell me the best procedures for a structural engineer to do after he finds there are cracks underneath the slab?

RE: cracks in the slab

Have you established the cause of the cracks?

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

RE: cracks in the slab

Get out from standing below said cracks until source is known.

Following publication may help you in this regard:

ACI 224.1R-07 Causes, Evaluation, and Repair of Cracks in Concrete Structures

RE: cracks in the slab

If possible, about a picture of the cracks to see how they are aligned to the slab

RE: cracks in the slab

Figure out the cause of the cracks. Decide if they are of concern. Determine what repair if any is needed.

I checked the design again and it was OK. I went to the site and the depth is OK. The cracks are going diagonally as yield lines would go. How do I check that the compressive strength and rebars in the slab are ok?

RE: cracks in the slab

what is the cracking moment of the slab and what is the actual load when cracks occurred. I would start with the common issues such as cover, depth of slab ect.

"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

RE: cracks in the slab

Just knowing that there are cracks doesn't tell us much, as most concrete structures, particularly the slabs, have some cracking. A description of the structure would help, along with identification of where the cracks are occurring.
