i run for years a mazak 3000w all the parameter were passed by nesting software from amada in the nc and run great.
now i changed company, and i have to use a trumpf L3050 5000w

te cutting table are on the machine, trumpf technician and onboard help say that focus poin it's at the tip of nozzle. so i can't undestend how the parameter in this machine works

for what i know focal point must be at 2/3 of the material thickness if cutting alluminium or fe360, and on surface if cutting aisi304,

frequency: less frequency on stainless steel help to not have a "plasma", in other materials what do?

gas pressure: more pressure help clean the back of cut, too high pressure cause a dross on back, too low cause not cutting or melting material on the back that weld the piece.

focal point: i kmow that the focal point must be at 2/3 of material thickness, but in trumpf focal point is always outside the material 2-3mmm from the surface, how can i handle it?

nozzle distance: new parameter that i don't have in mazak, ok it's the distance from the tip to the surface aterial, but what change if i modify the value?

there is a manual or something that teach me how all this stuff works? or someone can explain me?
i've learned all by alone with no training, and im sure it's not the right way, but there is no chance to have a official training.

machine cut is god but not best, and cutting modifing parameters with no comprension will result in a lot of material waste, time waste, and maybe damage to the machine, modify parameters by knowing what to do is better.

I run 4 Trumpf 2030 lasers, and the parameters should be sent to the machine if the programmer is using the Trumpf tops software.

If you modify the nozzle distance from the material you risk the chance of loosing the cut, where that will change the focal distance of the laser. I also program for my laser's and have never run into problems besides speed. What i have always did to change any setting is modify the tech table (fastkey 1151) to the default settings and change parameters in there. you can also look to see if your laser power cycles are off (fastkey 1152, to assure that the head height is correct just in case the sheet is not totally flat (fastkey 1153). make sure that your calibrate distance control system is at a 1.
(dont do what i did the first time i was in these settings, make sure your on the program you want to modify first)


I am unsure if that will help you since we are on 2 different machines. But the menus on all trumpf systems are the same

what i'm trying to say is:
load the nc code, enter in menu 1->5->3 "tech table" (or something like this, i'm italian and manu is in italia and say "tabelle tecnologiche" reset to defautl ALL the table. and it's all ok

but

i want to know how this parameter modify the cut

for example: cutting with frequency at 10000 or 20000 how change the cut? or in another way: how frequency influence the cut?

and this for all the parameters: speed, assist gas pressure, nozzle, nozzle distance, focal point, ecc....

this because if i cut for example the 15mm steel i have to reduce by 1mm the focal distance and rise from 0.8 to 1.0 bar the assist gas pressure to have a good cut, but knowing how parameter modify the cut maybe i can have better result

for most of the steel from 3mm to 20mm i have always to change the focal point, in some case 3mm to obtain a cut and not a welded piece...

for stainless steel from 2mm to 4mm i have to reduce the frequency from 20000 to 10000

i think the cutting heads are all out of focus (meccanically) but i dont know ho to set them and the trumpf thecnician says "the cutting head are perfect" but trying to cut the trump nc for checking mechanical focus the 7.5" head is 2mm out of focus, the 5" is 1.3mm out of focus, the 9" is 4.5mm out of focus...

Just spoke to trumpf applications here. and they said what you might want to do a focus rest ti get it better in line. and the frequency will only change the pulse and will slow the speed down, but would not really fix the cut. you might want to change the speed (slower) and also your gas pressure

Attached is Trumpf's basic "Laser processing" book in PDF format.

Hope it will help you to see just a bit better how parameters are working.

By the way: Trumpf, among other manuals, supplied each laser with so called "Data collection" booklet. There are just tables with power, speed, frequency, assist gas type and pressure, focal settings etc. for mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum of different thickness. You may have in somewhere around the laser.

I am not very familiar with Trumpf flatbed cutters, I am 5-axis 1005 TLC guy, but in your machine you may have programmable focal position, AKA "Focus line".
To check it you shall open your CNC program straight on the machine screen, find any line with TC_LASER_ON(. . .), put the cursor in the front of "T" and press the "key" button (not "enter"!) on the CNC console.
It shall open a parameter window on the Trumpf CNC screen. Then go to submenu "cutting large (medium or small) contour" and check if next and below the line "kerf" you have line "focal". Parameter in this line may be +/- 5mm. It represent position of the focal spot in accordance with the piece your is cutting, e.g. "-2" means focal point is 2 mm below the material surface.
Note, this parameter changes focal position, but NOT the nozzle distance.
