critical success factors and emerging issues and trends in engineering

critical success factors and emerging issues and trends in engineering

(OP)
I am doing some research on the general engineering and manufacturing industry, with a particular interest in jobbing and foundry operations. I am trying to determine critical success factors relating to this industry and emerging issues and trends facing companies.

Where could I source such information, particularly statistics? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks

One item you may wish to consider is flexibility - the ability of a process to switch between products of varying complexity and similarity. One example that comes to mind is a paper that was published, I believe, in the Harvard Business Review. It's a case study of the paper industry, and the processes should correlate fairly well to those of foundries, especially those that manufacture coil metals. Also check out www.superfactory.com as they have several good links to both established and emerging engineering practices.

Equipment Extended Life Cycles and Source Reduction

The Principles and Practices of Advanced Environmentally Responsible Applied TRIBOLOGY "PREDICTIVE" Maintenance P2 Engineering Technology were set forth and established by Mr. Peter Jost who wrote a landmark study in "1966" of the effect of friction, lubrication and wear on the Gross National Product of Great Britain

Jost defined TRIBOLOGY as, "the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion, and the practices related thereto."

TRIBOLOGY Affects:

the design and manufacture of any surface where two surfaces interact.

the use of materials where solid materials interact.

the interaction of wear surfaces with lubricants.

the reduction of friction and wear.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Applied TRIBOLOGY Can Help Solve or Eliminate
Some Costly and Time-Intensive Maintenance Procedures

REDUCE - Equipment Down or Out of Service Time

REDUCE - Lubricant Inventory Requirements

ELIMINATE - Premature Equipment Failures

REDUCE - Energy and Fuel Consumption

REDUCE - Hazardous Waste Lubricants

STREAMLINE - Maintenance Protocols

REDUCE - Waste Disposal Expenses

MAXIMIZE - Equipment Service Life

EXTEND - Lubricant Drain Intervals

REDUCE - Man Hour Requirements

REDUCE - Capital Expenditures

INCREASE - Production

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Applied TRIBOLOGY Affects:
Machine EFFICIENCY
Machine RELIABILITY
Machine MAINTAINABILITY
