portal bracing

Hi all,
Looking for some tips on how to calculate portal frame bracing sizes.(roof, vertical)
It's a simple single span,5 bay building,6 metres to eaves,roof slope 10 deg. 4.75m between frames,walls built to 2.4 metres.
Thanks

RE: portal bracing

Get a structural engineer?

RE: portal bracing

(OP)
I know I should, but I've done all the other calcs except for this, and I'm out of work at the minute.

RE: portal bracing

If you have done the other calcs correctly, you should be capable of this calc. If not, hire an SE.

RE: portal bracing

Do you have AISC design guide #7? That's a good place to start. Otherwise, if you can make your question more specific, I'll do my best to help. As it stands, it reads a bit like "how do I self perform a vasectomy?"

You really should engage the services of an SE of course. We're quite wonderful.

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

RE: portal bracing

If its a typical portal framed building you design the bracing similar to designing a truss.

Are you familiar with the methods of truss analysis e.g. method of sections, method of joints or if you want a bit of fun the Maxwell diagram ?

Cheers

Cheers, got it sorted using those little resolution of forces diagrams.
Building Control are asking me for a design on wall panels. Would I be required to do a design on this?
The walls are 2.5metres high cavity wall with 140 block inner leaf,no vertical loads on walls, just built between stanchions at 4.75 metre crs.

RE: portal bracing

It comes down to; can the wall panel resist wind loading with supports on 3 sides only or does it need a wind beam along the top?

I have a 178x89 channel turned toe down right along the top of wall so I would guess that is sufficent

RE: portal bracing

Paddy: It is a problem that you are guessing...

I sympathise with your being unemployed, but you seem out of your depth.

Perhaps you should find a Structural Engineer to coach you through thia first project? I am very confident you have the required skills, but are lacking the know-how to apply them to this project.

CEL, I,m not guessing, probably used that phrase loosely there. Anyway I'm coming up with a wind load (Wk) figure of 0.52 kn/square metre. I assume that I compare this with the dynamic wind load for the building (q)? The structure has been built a year ago and there's no problems with it to date.
