How to measure moment of inertia of the section?

How to measure moment of inertia of the section?

How to measure moment of inertia of the section?

(OP)
Hi everyone!

I`m using Siemens NX (version 9.0) and it is necessary to measure the moment of inertia of the section.
For example, I have a model which consists of many solid bodies (they are not united) and I want to measure moment of inertia (e.g. at the distance of 1000 mm by X-axis).

Hope that the question is more or less clear!
Thanks a lot in advance!

Regards,
MStas

RE: How to measure moment of inertia of the section?

You can use the function 'Area Using Curves' (you can find it using the Command Finder). It's an old function but it works fine. If you're looking for the Area Moment of Interia for something other than with respect to the 'centroid', which I assume is the case since you mention something about being "at the distance of 1000 mm by X-axis", irrespective of where your profile was modeled, what you need to do is set the current WCS (not a CSYS object but the actual WCS) at whereever you wish the inertia values to be measured and it will the give you BOTH the Moments about the centroid bit also about the axis and location relative to the active WCS.

Dear JohnRBaker,
Thank you very much for the quick response.

I`ve tried to follow your proposition. Unfortunately it still takes me a lot of time to calculate the moment of inertia of the section (in case when I have a lot of solid bodies, e.g. which were imported from another software). Look like it is necessary to create NXOpen application in order to make this operation more automatic.

You can also use Analysis -> Section Inertia to easily do this.

Thanks John L. for the supporting.

I tried to use this tool for the issue, but it is still difficult to understand its proper work.

Are you able to give me several advice regarding my problem?
It is also interesting to measure moment of inertia of the sketch which consists of many various lines, splines, arcs etc.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Best regards,
MStas
