PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

(OP)
Can anyone suggest how I get PVELITE 2014 to let me add a coupling on the straight flange portion of an F&D head?

RE: PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

As far as I know there is no way to do this in PV Elite. You will need open up Code Calc and put the coupling on a cylinder equivalent to the straight flange of the head.

Before you go through all that trouble... are calculations on this coupling required or can it be exempt per UG-36(c)(3)(a)?

(OP)
yes it's exempt per UG-36(c)(3) however the A.I. wants to see the nozzle neck thk and weld size calcs & the easiest way to provide all of that is to have it in the calc package.

RE: PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

Code Calc is the way to go then.

RE: PVELITE : CPLG LOCATED ON HEAD STRAIGHT FLANGE?

Never say die;- there is way to do it, just a bit of walking around. First set the straingth flange to 0 (zero) and then attach a piece of shell to the head equivalent of the straight flange length. Voila, all done. Now you can add nozzles on that shell. Howzat?

gr2vessels, Thanks, thats how I ended up doing it. There are a lot of little quirks in this software like that. I can't add a fitting to the top of a blind flange, and several other.....why can't I or Wish it would...have popped up now that I'm using it on a regular basis.

Well, I don't know about the weld size calcs, but with regards to the nozzle neck thickness for a coupling I'd suggest a quick perusal of Interpretation VIII-1-83-217:

Question: Are threaded couplings welded directly to a pressure vessel to be designed per ANSI B16.11 as stated in UG-11, footnote 5, Section VIII, Division 1, thus disregarding the requirements of UG-45 for nozzle neck thicknesses, since no neck exists?

Reply: Yes.

'Course, that's an old interpretation. If anybody knows of a Code change or newer interpretation which would invalidate it, please let me know.
