Bottom Chord replace in kind

Bottom Chord replace in kind

Bottom Chord replace in kind

(OP)

Attached is the detail of existing bottom chord of a truss for conveyor. We like to repair the member and add some reinforcing along the double angles but don't know of a detail?
Seems the heads of rivits are on the way of reinforcing members? They can't be place against the vertical legs and horizontal legs and then get attcahed to gusset plate due to the rivit heads.

Any ideas? I appreciate for direction. A sketch can communicate the best.

And please don't comment me to take it to experience structural engineer, I am a junior structural engineer and appereciate if you can give advise but not saying take to a a professionals.

Thank you

RE: Bottom Chord replace in kind

It really depends on the nature, extent and location(s) of rusting. Photos?

RE: Bottom Chord replace in kind

Temporarily support truess, clean existing steel, weld members together, remove rivets, then add new material to the bottom chord.

truess = trusses

I think your sketch got cut off. So it's hard to see the number, location and purpose of the rivets.
But I would be tempted to shore up the area, drill out the existing rivets and either weld or bolt (using the rivet holes) the reinforcing member on.

RE: Bottom Chord replace in kind

Depending on the extent of rusting, the reuse of the rivet holes may not be possible. I've also seen rushing so bad that cleaning up the steel left little to weld to.
