sizing of reinforcement question

sizing of reinforcement question

sizing of reinforcement question

(OP)
Hi all,

I have to size reinforcement for a very thick short retaining wall (under 6 feet in height). The thickness (2.5 feet thick) is based on aesthetics and must be maintained.

For design of the stem, when I check to see what my min. As is based on the overall stem Ag per ACI, my requirement for reinforcement is obviously becomes very large - way more than what my flexure calcs actually require because the wall is so short.

Any insight/tips?

Thanks

RE: sizing of reinforcement question

Under ACI 318 (not sure of your specific code) - section 10.5.3 allows you to use (min As) = (required As) x 1.33

RE: sizing of reinforcement question

What JAE said. Required As x 1.33 will probably control. You probably just want to put one layer of steel in the middle instead of one on each face.

RE: sizing of reinforcement question

It might be a good application for an unreinforced gravity retaining wall. I've always wanted to try that. PCA has a freely available design guide for those. As I understand it, unreinforced stuff made from good concrete pretty much lasts for ever (Parthenon). Control joints of course.

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

RE: sizing of reinforcement question

If aesthetics are an issue, you may want reasonably spaced skin reinforcement to control crack width.

RE: sizing of reinforcement question

I've never actually used it, so I don't have any insight, but you may be able to design it as Structural Plain Concrete (Chapter 22).

ok

thanks all for the insight
