Optimization and Structural Optimization & References
(OP)
Hi ALL
Since I am new in this topic , and my intention is to conduct some optimization on an orthotropic plate deformations , bending and perhaps shear , I would like to know , whether should I start from Optimization books and concepts , what is the difference in discussion when the topic is changed to structural optimization
and in which references , the plates are discussed more on their optimization ?
thank you all

You can take some advanced classes in Structural Analysis and Design and Theory of Elasticity which will touch on the concept of structural optimization during a few sessions of the whole course. And, without a doubt you can find some books on the subject by some professor who’s view is so narrow that he/she can’t even talk about it if it is not in tension. But, in the real world you/they are missing the real point if you take this narrow scholarly view.
Do clean, easily fabricated details, design around readily available materials and material sizes and use them efficiently. Clean up your shop methods and procedures so they run efficiently and smoothly, and save every minute possible in process and material handling, and fixturing, fit-up, clamping, welding, etc. These types of things (this thinking process) will pay greater dividends in producing a min. price, min. material used, high quality product, than a bunch of esoteric number crunching and philosophizing.

Orthotropic plates are already a pretty efficient design concept when designed and fabricated properly. You can rarely optimize everything in the same design. You can’t change the rib depth or thickness over the middle third of the length very easily. There are trade offs and that’s where experience and engineering judgement come into play. That’s were knowing your shop comes into play. The Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation has a good, practical, book on the subject; namely “Orthotropic Bridges, Theory and Design,” by M.S. Troitsky, well worth the small price. Look also at their books by Omer W. Blodgett, “Design of Weldments” and “Design of Welded Structures” and others.

well the thing is , I am not going to optimiza an industrial orthotropic plate , there is a plate , that has an ABD matrix , and we are free to change it's arrays to have an optimum deflection , so mostly I should concentrate on how to use the deflection equation and so on to do the optimization
