Doubler Plate Strength for Pipe to Pipe connections
Doubler Plate Strength for Pipe to Pipe connections
(OP)
As with most offshore jackets doubler plates are very common to attach other tubular members ( wall thickness > 1/2 inch) to avoid punching shear. I have seen many engineers rely on Joint Can Re-design to design doubler plate thickness. I would like to know a way to caculate doubler plate dimensions and weld sizes required. I assume there would be a check for Shear, Bending (major & minor), and Tension and the actual loads would be member end forces from the brace member. I assume I would be able to include the wall thickness of the chord member or ignoring would give a very conservative result. Any tips, calcs, or references for pipe to pipe doubler plates definitely helps. thanks.
