MWAP in FRP storage Tank

MWAP in FRP storage Tank

MWAP in FRP storage Tank

(OP)
Hello everyone,

I was asked to calculate the MWAP for an FRP storage tank.

Is calculation the same as per API 650?

Thanks,

Rich

RE: MWAP in FRP storage Tank

If not BUILT to API 650, I'd say no.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks Mike for the quick reply!

All I have a GA drawing. it says FRP Tank in accordance with spec ASTM 3299.

API 650 is not mentioned anywhere in the drawing.

Thanks,

Rich

RE: MWAP in FRP storage Tank

Richard2000,

Is API 650 is not limited to steel fabricated tanks?
Maybe you have to refer to ASME Section X?

Kurt

RE: MWAP in FRP storage Tank

You may also be able to obtain some testing guidelines from API 12P. While the tank is not built to the standard, you can use the standard to develop an inspection and testing plan for your project.

RE: MWAP in FRP storage Tank

BTW - that tank is almost certainly "Atmospheric" and needs to be operated as such.

ASME X is what FRP pressure vessels get built to. And they are impossible to reverse-engineer. The tensile of the yarn, the winding angles [must be more than one], fill factor, use of 'chop', ester mix and cure conditions all have 'order of magnitude' impacts on the strength of a FPR tank/vessel.

If I had to certify an unknown one, I would fill it 98% (+) full of water and GENTLY pressure it up with air/N2/Ar to 0.5 to 1.0 psi, then certify it to one-third to half of that test pressure. And that constitutes $iss-Poor Engineering. If you want a good one, buy a good one. Doggy doo-doo is tough to certify.

RE: MWAP in FRP storage Tank

Beware of chemical delivery to these fragile tanks via truck compressed air methods !!!

These tanks should be operated at atmospheric pressure and provide for extra venting during liquid delivery

Several FRP tanks have failed because the owner/specify failed to include an emergency relief vent on the tank.
