Repairing coneyor trusses -construction

Repairing coneyor trusses -construction

(OP)
It is decided to replace few bottom chords/members of a belt conveyor truss due to excessive rust. I am not sure what are site prepartions? Do we need to hold the truss while removing old bad members? Do we need to lift the truss? How much? What do we do to keep truss stable while replacing some bottom chords? Construction sequence?

Thank you

RE: Repairing coneyor trusses -construction

From the nature of your questions , are you sure you are not starting to pratice in an area that is totally outside your area of expertise. My suggestion is to hire an engineer experienced in these matters.

RE: Repairing coneyor trusses -construction

I assume a structural engineer is involved in making the determination that the bottom chord needs replacement. If so, then he should specify how the work is to be accomplished (shoring and location) Who the engineer will work for (Owner or Contractor) will be determined by contractual relationship.

I am still looking for shoring methods for replacement of truss bottom chords.
Anybody has done it in past during their career. I apprecaite if you can direct me.
Any reports, documents, calculations?

Thank you

It doesn't matter how many threads you start if you aren't giving us enough information to help.

RE: Repairing coneyor trusses -construction

@SKJ: I doubt that anyone's going scan an entire job file to share with you. If I were you, I'd post some plan information, an elevation of the truss, and some photos of the corrosion.

The folks who frequent this site are a very helpful bunch. If you supply the information that they need to help you, you'll quickly find yourself inundated with first rate advice. At the same time, those same folks are busy people. They're not likely to waste their time guessing at solutions to problems that they don't understand sufficiently.

Are you working under some kind of strict confidentiality agreement? Is there a prolonged power outage in your area? Fire up your scanner and jump in the pool man! I've been waiting all week to say something clever about your damn shoring problem.

Ah Kootk; That's the comment that keeps on giving... Funny, slightly irrelevant, very pointedly annoyed, and yet STILL HELPFUL.

I hope the OP listens. I just know we're in for trouble when there is a second thread, after the first thread contained "don't tell me to go hire someone who knows how to do it.".

No offense intended, but we'd better get good info this time or I'm going to start a blacklist of people I won't help. Too frustrating; right up there with the new grads who argue when given good advice! *sigh*

Excellent.

Let's get this party started:

1) Your sketch shows some stuff (channel / angle) attached to the truss bottom chord.  Are those members part of a horizontal truss or do they serve some other function?

2) How many lineal feet of bottom chord do you expect to have to replace?

3) Will the chord replacement affect the panel point connections or will the repair be limited to sections of chord between panel points?

4) How congested is the area in which the repairs will take place?  Will their be access for shoring on either side of the conveyor?

5) What kind of steel sections are your truss webs made from?  Double angles?

What I don't know about rivets is a lot.  I do, however, have one related document in my library and you're welcome to it: Link
