API 1104- Large diameter slip-on flanges.

API 1104- Large diameter slip-on flanges.

(OP)
Hi,
I'm New to API 1104, previously worked with AS and ASME standards.
I need to qualify a procedure and welders to weld a ASTM A105N 1200NB slip-on flange to x52 pipe 12.7mm thick. This should be an easy feat but an I missing a trick here. is the easiest way to get some pipe around the 350Nb at the same SMYS as the x52 and get some disc cut out of similar material and weld on (one side only) and have 4 specimens cut and broken. Repeat this procedure for the welder qualifications.
This should qualify the procedure and welders for both internal and external fillets.
Am I missing a trick here??

Can this be qualified by doing three fillet welds (2F, 3F & 4F)but this wouldn't qualify a diameter range and I would assume I would have to have 12mm to 20mm plates to qualify this.

Cheers

RE: API 1104- Large diameter slip-on flanges.

In ASME B16.47 only weldneck flanges are given.
Are you sure of 1200NB this SLIPON flange is from an ASME standard?

I am NOT a welding guy!

RE: API 1104- Large diameter slip-on flanges.

I would try red flagging this yourself and re posting in the AWS welding issues section in the Engineering codes and standards sections.

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
