Specification for bore hole spacing

Specification for bore hole spacing

Specification for bore hole spacing

(OP)
Guys

Is there any specification for spacing of the bore holes based on the project type (length and area) for the geotechnical investigation.

I am looking for geotechnical investigation for access roads in a solar plant

Thanks
NT

RE: Specification for bore hole spacing

In a word: NO.

It depends on the project type, expected variability of the subsurface conditions, acceptable risk, etc.

Scope should be negotiated between the selected specialist (geotechnical engineer) and the owner.

When someone sets a scope and then has the engineers "bid" on the project, no one wins.

RE: Specification for bore hole spacing

I really like GeoPaveTraffic's answer. That said, there are specifications. The specificaitons may be misleading, however. Heck, there are specifications for all sorts of things.

For a 2 lane roadway, we'd specify a boring every 200 ft. FHWA may allow up to 400 ft if you already know you have uniform conditions (i.e., working in the Coastal Plain or such).

in private practice, I'd just base my boring locations on reasonable spacing and the grading plan. I mean if theres a 6 ft cut, I'd want to know if that cut soil would be any good for fill.

RE: Specification for bore hole spacing

you'll find some recommendations for levees in DM7 and that's about it for published guidelines for linear projects.
urban areas is 1 boring per 10,000 square feet, but i'm not sure in rural areas, so go with geopave's recommendation.
