Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

(OP)
Which one is more conservative to design (enclosed or partially enclosed)?
Which one results on higher wind loads on building?

Thank you

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

Each has it, s own...

Enclosed will result in more lateral force, ann partially enclosed in more uplift.

Mike McCann, PE, SE (WA)

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

In general, partially enclosed results in higher loadings.

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

(OP)
msquared48 (Structural), this is for determination of wind load on girt. Does it matter?

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

Don't enclosed and partially enclosed use they same Components and Cladding external pressure coefficient, so partially enclosed will always be higher when the internal pressure coefficient is used?

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

wannabeSE....yes; however, the windward side sees a reduction from the internal pressure while the leeward side sees an increase.

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

Ron,
In ASCE 7, internal pressure may act inward or outward. Internal pressure coefficients are + and -.

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

History has proven that buildings are far more likely to fair in wind events when their openings are open... That, and having seen a few commercial properties on the ground after high winds had their way with open garage doors, says it all for me.

RE: Partially Enclosed or Enclosed

wannabeSE...true...but not at the same time.
