lateral analysis of irregular shaped building
lateral analysis of irregular shaped building
(OP)
I was recently asked to analyze an irregular shaped building. Each of the wings in the building resemble hockey sticks that are joined with a straight section. The LLRS consists of moment frames in both directions. In addition, there are expansion joints at the locations where the hockey sticks join the straight section. Therefore I would assume we have three buidings. Also there is no symmetry in the structure. It is very straight forward to analyze the straight section but how do analyze the hockey stick shaped section? Any input or references would be appreciated.I have checked the UBC and there is nothing that applies to this situation.
Thanks in advance

Once you have modelled it in 3D, take a look at your sidesway produced by lateral loads - earthquake and wind.
At that point, you need to decide whether to continue with a single building with the 'hockey stick' ends or separate it into 3 buildings with joints that are separated a safe distance so that the buildings don't hit each other when subjected to said loads.
