Plate Buckling

Plate Buckling

Plate Buckling

(OP)
Hi,

I have been racking my brain over a problem that involves plate buckling. I have found the critical buckling stress formula by Timoshenko however I need to determine if there is something more practical out there. I essentially would like to know if there is a way to determine the buckling capacity of a cantilevered thin plate with a point load on the end. Will that plate globally buckle, is it LTB.

Thanks

RE: Plate Buckling

Do you mean like Euler Buckling Equation for a column? or do you mean a beam? if it is a beam then you most likely will not buckle if bending about minor axis. if in the US, look up the equations in the AISC Specification for flexible/bending, nice pictures and equations.

Thank you

RE: Plate Buckling

axial (compression) or transverse (bending) load.

euler does not address local buckling, "crippling".

If it's turned on edge, check the latest AISC spec, which includes allowable stress for flat bars bent the hard way.

My next question is, if this a stub (short in length) and does not have considerable bending deformation, is there a reference that accounts for the span/depth ratios and considers the shear deformation.
