layer setting and object visibility

layer setting and object visibility

layer setting and object visibility

(OP)
So my coworker has a file where turning a layer off doesn't hide the object (but it does make it non-selectable). I tried going to "layer visible in view" and choosing the "reset to global" option as mentioned in threads:
thread561-215969: Visible In View or Layer Control
thread561-333870: Layer setting and Layer Visible In View

However, it doesn't seem to be working in this case. Any other tricks/options to set?

RE: layer setting and object visibility

Is that in the model views, or s drawing view ?

If it is in a model view then try changing to a differnt canned view to see if you get the same result.

RE: layer setting and object visibility

Cowski,

Here is once case that may cause what you are seeing.

If the layer in question is also the "product outline" layer and the show product outline (Customer Defaults -> Assemblies -> Site Standards -> Misc-> Product Outline-> Layer) is toggled on in the assemblies toolbar, the layer can be set to off in the global layer settings but the layer is displayed but not selectable.

Modeling view.

I used "replace view" to go to the top view, layer settings worked there. I used "replace view" to switch back to the trimetric view and now it works there too.

Wish I knew why that fixed it and how it got out of synch in the first place...

Thanks jerry!

Joe,
We have layer 190 defined as the product outline layer, but this was happening on every layer; i.e. the layer setting would not control the visibility of any layer.

RE: layer setting and object visibility

Cowski,

I'm glad that Jerry's solution worked. If a reproducible case can be found it would be worth submitting to GTAC (or attempting to change the layer settings via API.) winky smile

RE: layer setting and object visibility

I have never found it worthwhile to use visible-in-view in modeling when it is so simple to control layers directly, and it is my understanding that it was originally intended to be used in drafting, not modeling.
As to your problem, I think that is a good one for GTAC.

I can't think of a single good reason to use visible in view in a modeling view. Perhaps it had a purpose 'back in the day'. I'm not entirely convinced that it was the cause of our particular problem.

We did contact GTAC, their response this morning was to use the 'reset to global' option; which, as mentioned above, doesn't fix it in our case.
