Benefit of use SWPS ASME IX Article V
Benefit of use SWPS ASME IX Article V
(OP)
Gents,
After reading the requirements or ASME IX article V regarding use of Standard Welding Procedures Specifications (QW-510). Contrary to what is allowed in AWS D1.1 where it is accepted using pre-qualified procedures without any further test, ASME IX establish mandatory visual and volumetric inspection to validate the porcedure. So what´s the benefit??
Companies adopt prequalified AWS D1.1 WPS as a way to reduce time, cost and efforts.
On the other hand, as the SWPS listed in annex E are protected by copyright. should I take a original document from AWS to adopt?
Regards

Each contractor wishing to use SWPS must purchase them from AWS through a licensing agreement.
Personal view, they have little to offer in the grand scheme of life.

One example would be to make a GTAW PQR, then write a GTAW WPS *and* also use that PQR for the rood & 'hot-pass' of a combined GTAW/SMAW WPS [the SMAW portion would come from a SMAW PQR]. Thus for the price & time of making two PQR's, GTAW & SMAW, you now have three WPS's -- GTAW, SMAW, GTAW+SMAW. And you can also use these two PQR's to make other WPS's, to satisfy specific customer requests.
