how to change part/drawing number without too much work

how to change part/drawing number without too much work

how to change part/drawing number without too much work

(OP)
hello - i have a situation where an assembly & drawings were created with the wrong numbers - i would like to know an easy way to change the part number &
drawing number and still have everything stay together - the title block on the drawing is correct but it is not the same as the part -
example - part is called frame - drawing is called frame - drawing number in title block of drawing is a10xxx-xx - part in assembly is also called frame -
need part & drawing to be called a10xxx-xx - any easy fix for this?? - any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you

RE: how to change part/drawing number without too much work

First you should be using the Cusotm properties in in your drawing to pull the SW part name or link it to property in the part.

None-the-less you can use SW explorer to rename both the part and the drawing and it will maintain the links.

The other way is to open both files and sane save the part as the new name and accept the message you get when it tell you its referenced. Then do the same to the drawing. if you have the links setup like i mentioned in the beginning this will be a simple solution.

I agree with Scott.
I usually use SW Explorer, it keeps the links together for everywhere it's used.

Later versions of SW allow you to rename files within Windows folders.

hello again & thank you both so much - i am new to using solidworks & do not have a real feel for the internal workings as of yet - using explorer worked great -
i was actually repairing these drawings for someone else &thought there was a faster way to do this - thank you again

Windows Explorer... or SolidWorks Explorer? There is a SolidWorks Explorer menu contained in Windows Explorer (right click the file), but it brings you to the same rename dialog.

If you just rename in Windows Explorer... you will break the references.

Pack and Go would work great too, especially if you are concerned about changing someone elses work. You save them to new names, confirm the changes are correct, and then delete or take the other files off-line. When you are working in unfamiliar software it's sometimes safer to work with copies of another persons work.
