Existing Masonry Wall Horizontal Reinforcing Requirements?

Existing Masonry Wall Horizontal Reinforcing Requirements?

Existing Masonry Wall Horizontal Reinforcing Requirements?

(OP)
I may be faced with a project in the future where I need to reinforce an unreinforced masonry wall. The wall would need to comply with the requirements for intermediate reinforced masonry shear walls in accordance with IBC 2009.

While getting the vertical reinforcing into the cells is difficult, it is feasible. Is it possible to install steel plates on the outside of the wall at 10'-0" o.c. to comply with the horizontal reinforcing requirements of the code? It would be preferred to install the plates from one side only.... but it may be possible to install the plates from both sides in this instance.

RE: Existing Masonry Wall Horizontal Reinforcing Requirements?

An exterior wrap with FRP is widely done here for that situation. I have never had to use it though.

Never really looked into this type of a system before. Who designs the wrap? and who does the installation? Are there standard companies?

RE: Existing Masonry Wall Horizontal Reinforcing Requirements?

I honestly do not know. My son may though. I will ask him.

re FRP - there are specialty firms that will design and install it. You give them demands/performance criteria. We used fibrwrap (google them to find contact info) on a project, but I'm sure there are many other similar companies that do it. I think that you could use external steel as well with regards to your original question.
