Precast Floor Bearing on Masonry Wall Demo

Precast Floor Bearing on Masonry Wall Demo

Precast Floor Bearing on Masonry Wall Demo

(OP)
This is a precast mezzanine which bears on an existing masonry wall. The owner would like to demo the mezzanine.
My questions are as follows:

1. How would this typically be done or how should it be done? Meaning can they remove the floor plank by plank and remove/replace the masonry units as they go; or grout the wall solid as they go? Should they shore the roof and remove the masonry completely?
2. How do they remove the planks? Saw cut near the wall then chisel the rest out?

I can envision a few ways of this happening however I was curious to know more.

Thanks!

RE: Precast Floor Bearing on Masonry Wall Demo

There are different ways to do this depending upon access, equipment available, etc. Engineer should specify what needs to be done and Contractor should determine actual MEANS AND METHODS.

Crossing the line from WHAT to HOW can affect your liability.

RE: Precast Floor Bearing on Masonry Wall Demo

My guess:

1) Shore the precast at the CMU bearing wall.
2) Temporarily brace the CMU walls just below the precast.
3) Cut the precast along both walls so that the bulk of it can be removed and you've just got precast nubs sticking out of the CMU.
4) Use some kind of appropriate jack hammer / bush hammer to chip out the precast nubs, wall dowels and maybe some portion of the grout from the CMU.
5) Solid grout the void created in step #4.

How pretty does the finished product need to be?

The greatest trick that bond stress ever pulled was convincing the world it didn't exist.

Ok this is similar to what I had in mind. I like to have an idea on how any aspect on the project can be completed, not that I will detail how to do it, but it may affect other decisions along the way.

I will have to check what the intended wall finish is like.

Thanks again!

I wholly agree with your strategy RF. I've been known to include an "anticipated sequence of construction" on my renovation drawings. It's shrouded in goofy disclaimers of course. My insurer hates it but that's okay, they're not the boss of me. At least, not yet.

If it doesn't have to be pretty, you could just leave it after KootK's step 3.
