Spot weld done on Flange
Spot weld done on Flange
(OP)
We are Fabricating Pipe Spools, inorder to identify the Pipe Spools we are cold hard stamping a two digit identification mark on flange face (Thickness Portion) without disturbing/interfering manufacturer's identification.
We had some error in hard stamping of Spool identification, to correct the identification we have spot welded on identification and grounded off and there is no damage to the Manufacturer markings.
As per SA105 Cl.10.3 - For forgings repaired by welding to be heat treated.
The Question is whether the spot welding on the flange is considered as repair and whether the flange is to be heat treated as per cl.10.3 of SA105 or please let me know the right corrective action in such cases.
Thanks for the reply in advance.

RE: Spot weld done on Flange
Based on what I see in your attached photo, it looks as if you did the "Spot Weld" on the Outside Diameter of the Flange.
Can you clarify this for us?
prognosis: Lead or Lag
RE: Spot weld done on Flange
First - did you use an ASME Section IX qualified procedure for the spot welds?
Second - did you perform NDT after grinding the weld flush?
Third, most likely you will need to evaluate the affect of spot welding on the flange material to disposition use. This means having a mock-up done and performing destructive examination of the base metal heat affected zone.
RE: Spot weld done on Flange
Dear Sir,
1. We have used qualified welder as per ASME Sec.IX
2. Yes we performed 100%MPT on the Grounded off area.
3. Performing destructive examination means whether we have to do any destructive tests on flange, which test?, as we are planning to perform Hardness test on the Spot welded area and might be we will check in adjacent areas of weld also.

Tacks look small. many times don't we tack weld a fixture to hold the flange?
