Initial Condition - apply torional strain over beam section
Initial Condition - apply torional strain over beam section
(OP)
Hi,
I'd like to apply torional strain over beam section (beam element) as an initial condition. However, according to ABAQUS's user manual, there is no such option for beam element. I'm not sure whether I missed some points in the manual. So, I'm writing this message for your suggestions and comments on my idea. Many thanks!

RE: Initial Condition - apply torional strain over beam section
Put a unit length cantilever beam or a couple of them on the main beam, perpendicular to the beam axis of the main beam, where you want to apply the torsion, and/or remove it. Then apply a unit load, or whatever load to the cantilever to induce the torsion. These canti. loads will cause a bending gravity load to the main beam, but this affect can be cancelled out by applying and equal and opposite load at the axis of the main beam. Thus, all that’s left is the torsional action.

Thank you so much for your prompt replies! I'll try your suggestions soon. The reason why I raised the previous question is that I'd like to simulate the wound deformation of flexible pipeline during offshore installation. I thought that the wound deformation might be due to the release of torsional strain. So, I tried to simulate the release of torsional strain in order to see whether or not the pipeline can be wound as shown in the attached file. Attached is a brief summary of this analysis for your reference. Could you please give me some shining points/ fresh ideas? Many thanks!
Best Regards,
