Need to build up material

Need to build up material

Need to build up material

(OP)
I have a part that I need to add material to.

The part is a shoulder for an o-ring that was machined too small and has come back to bite me. (Previous engineer's mistake - he designed the gland too narrow by 0.030 and the shoulder too small by 0.008.)

The part is a rod, 17-4PH H900, about 2 inches in length and 0.21 inches diameter. The rod it is inserted into is a tube of ID 0.220 inches. Based on Parker design guidelines the shoulder should be 0.218 inches diameter. Most of the rod cannot be modified or machined just the two shoulders. There are some excellent surfaces for masking if needed.

I cannot use chrome and nickel has been flaky lately although I am still looking at it.

Any recommendations for a quick and cheep fix would be appreciated. (I asked the machinist if he could machine it 0.008 larger but I am afraid he is not that good.)

The next run of parts will be corrected so this is just a patch so that we can use the current inventory.

RE: Need to build up material

You might look into someone in your area that does flame spray. The company I work for does a lot of machine repair and we flame spray weld to build up worn surfaces. If done correctly you wouldn't even know it's been done.
Hope this helps.

RE: Need to build up material

Talk to a plating house...maybe they have some ideas to add 0.008" cheaply.
