I'm AWS qualified in the SMAW process for all position and unlimited thickness to ASME IX. The filler metal used was 7018. Am I qualified to SMAW stainless steel using stainless steel filler metal?

RE: Welder Qualification

To what welding standard?

Best regards - Al

ASME IV

Sorry, the standard is AWS D1.6.

RE: Welder Qualification

No. You are not qaulified to weld SS using E3XX electrodes, which are classed as F5. This is an essential variable.

Thanks.

RE: Welder Qualification

There are several families of stainless steel. If the stainless steel can be welded with an F4 electrode, the welder is also qualified for D1.6 work. If the particular stainless steel cannot be joined using an F4 electrode, the answer is hat welder must be requalified. The Engineer retained by the Owner should be able to make a final decision on the subject if the work is in accordance with an AWS structural welding code.

Best regards - Al

Where can I find a list of electrodes classified as f4? Does f4 mean all position? Thanks!

RE: Welder Qualification

F4 include low hydrogen electrodes found in AWS A5.1, A5.4, and A5.5. It does not include austenitic or duplex stainless steels (AISI 300 family, i.e., 304, 308, 316, etc.).

Best regards - Al
