Nozzle Reinforcement Area

Nozzle Reinforcement Area

Nozzle Reinforcement Area

(OP)
Hi,

We are working on designing a vessel where we are supposed to design the nozzles which are welded only from outside. Considering UW-16(e)(1), which says "When welded from the outside only, the neck or tube shall extend to be at least flush to the inside surface of the vessel wall. Such attachments shall satisfy the rules for reinforcement of openings, except that no material in the nozzle neck shall be counted as reinforcement".

The reinforcement area calculation with the formula in UG-37 is A = d*tr*F+..... ; in which d is the inner diameter of the nozzle from the figure UG-37.1. But, when you see the above statement which says no material in the nozzle neck shall be counted as reinforcement, does that mean we must consider the outer diameter of the nozzle in the formula?

Thanks for the help.

RE: Nozzle Reinforcement Area

Lanstrax,

Yes, you're correct. See Fig. UG-40 for reference.

I hope this will help.

Thank you.

Is this not a standard type of weld? As none of the softwares Compress, Design Calc or PvElite uses this type of welding calculation.
