Choo Choo Bridges
(OP)
Hey guys,
It looks like I will be designing my first railroad bridge soon. I have about ten years highway bridge design experience. I will be preparing a TS&L for this project but I am worried the RR (AREA) specs will not arrive soon enough. Could someone please tell me what allowable stresses RR use for design (bending and shear) and, since this will likely be a steel thru girder span, any particulars regarding connection concerns (e.g. knee brace design requirements)? Also, I believe we will recommend a concrete trough for a ballasted deck. What is the usual thickness for the trough and the 28day strength for the concrete? Thanks in advance. - Ed

RE: Choo Choo Bridges
You need to beg, borrow, or steel a copy of the AREA specs. There are significant differences in loading and design practice that you must understand in order to perform a competent T.S.&L. study. The owner will likely prefer a delay in TS&L to one done without the requisite background information.

Also note that AREA has changed to AREMA!!
