(b) For GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, PAW, and SAW,
or combinations of these processes, a PQR for a process
recording a test coupon that was at least 1
⁄2 in. (13 mm)
thick may be combined with one or more other PQRs
recording another welding process and any greater base
metal thickness. In this case, the process recorded on the
first PQR may be used to deposit the root layers using
the process(es) recorded on that PQR up to 2t (for short-
circuiting type of GMAW, see QW-404.32) in thickness
on base metal of the maximum thickness qualified by the
other PQR(s) used to support the WPS. The requirements
of Note (1) of tables QW-451.1 and QW-451.2 shall apply.

Now explain above statement or quote other examples

You are not qualified for all base metal thicknesses using the GTAW process for the root layers; e.g., root and hot pass. With the GTAW process, you are qualified up to 20 mm and with the SMAW process up to 64 mm.
If you had qualified the GTAW process on 1/2 inch plate making the root and hot pass with the GTAW process and fill passes with the SMAW process or the complete 1/2" thickness welded out with the GTAW process, you could make the root layers for T up to 64 mm using the SMAW process for the fill as presently qualified.

While I was around when this requirement was included in IX, I was not a Committee member and over the years have forgotten their exact reasoning.

I have two WPS
Case 1
WPS # 1 Base metal thickness = 16 mm, GTAW 6 mm , SMAW 10 mm
WPS # 2 Base metal thickness = 36 mm, GTAW 10 mm , SMAW 26 mm

How can i combine it according to QW-200.4(b)

Case 2
WPS # 1 Base metal thickness = 14 mm, SMAW 14 mm
WPS # 2 Base metal thickness = 24 mm, GTAW 8 mm , SMAW 16 mm

How can i combine it according to QW-200.4(b), which will be Process for Root

Case 3
WPS # 1 Base metal thickness = 14 mm, GTAW 14 mm
WPS # 2 Base metal thickness = 24 mm, GTAW 8 mm , SMAW 16 mm

WPS's cannot be 'combined', but they may be used sequentially. Weld the root & hotpass with one WPS, and switch to a compatable WPS to weld out. Meaning that if the first WPS is for P1 mild steel, the second one cannot be for P4 chrome steel. Both WPS's have to be for the exact material group and thickness, thus a 50mm maximum WPS is not qualified to put in the root on a 65mm piece of steel.

The smart thing to do is to look at your PQR's. See if any combination of them will let you write the WPS you are *really* wanting. It is fully acceptable to use more than one PQR to support 1 WPS.

Should your query read PQR instead of WPS. You can use multiple PQRs to support a WPS.

Say for example you did a PQR on a 1.5" thick plate with SAW process. This will give you a WPS good for 3/16" to 8" qualified thickness. Then say you have a PQR done on 1/2" plate with GTAW process. This would give a WPS good for 3/16" to 1". However since the PQR for the GTAW process was done on a plate 1/2" thick you can combine the two PQRs and cover the entire thickness range 3/16" to 8". If you did your GTAW process PQR on 3/8" plate instead.....you could still combine both PQRs into one WPS but you would be limited in thickness to 3/4" (2 x 3/8").

And remember it is PQR thickness not process thickness. You can have a PQR that has a GTAW root with SMAW fill on 1/2" plate and this will satisfy the 1/2" thickness.
