detemine max pressure of pipeline
detemine max pressure of pipeline
(OP)
Hello all, I am new on this fourm. I have a question, which I believe is not overly difficult but I am unsure how to approach.
I have a tank filled with water on top of the hill, and will be running water down the hill in HDPE pipe via gravity. How would I go about determining the max pressure that the line will experience when we open the valve at the top of the tank. And when the line is fully hydro'd.
There are bends and some elevations at the bottom of the hill where the water flushes
Any guideance would be appreciated.

RE: detemine max pressure of pipeline
To avoid over pressuring the pipe at the bottom you might need to section the pipeline or section it in terms of a lower design pressure at the top of the hill.
A dimensioned profile sketch would really help here.
If your pipe doesn't run full and has an open end then the above might be able to be relaxed, but currently you haven't given slope, line size, flow rate etc.

Its a process water line, running water from the storage tank up the hill, down to a distribution header. there is a pressure control valve at the bottom where then the line splits to various areas. This line will be running full
It's a 12" line down the hill, roughly a km long. Struggling with the elevation off the top of my head and slope.
More so worried about at the bottom where we have bends in the line, such as up into the pipe rack.
RE: detemine max pressure of pipeline
Max pressure in a PE 100 line (SDR 11) is 16bar, so you max elevation from lowest point to highest liquid level in your tank is approx. 160m before you will exceed the max rating of your pipe. If its more than than then you need very good pressure control at point or points along the line or you need a break tank a bit further down the hill
Don't know why you're worried about bends - they should not be a concern or issue for max pressure

How do you get the water to run up the hill? (Is that pipe part of this problem?)
If the valve is at the top of the tank, how will you get the water out of the tank?
What do YOU mean when you say, "Hydro'd". Full of water, or hydrotested?
you must get smarter than the software you're using.
