Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

(OP)
ABB Switchgear Manual Fig.12-3 states the terminals of a transformer (1U,1V,1W for the primary side and 2U, 2V, 2W for the secondary side) are arranged from right to left as viewed from the low-voltage side, with their inscriptions visible from the low-voltage side. this is referred to DIN 42402, is there any equivalent in IEC or IEEE?

RE: Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

As per IEC TR (Technical Report) 60616-1978 , as viewed from LV it shall be 2W,2V,2U,2N (for LV) and 1W,1V,1U,1N (for HV) and for single phase units 2.1,2.2 (LV) and 1.1,1.2 (HV)

As per IEEE C57.12.70-2000, as viewed from LV, it shall be X0 , X1, X2, X3 (LV) H0 ,H1 ,H2,H3 (HV) .For Single phase units it shall be X2, X1 (LV) and H1 ,H2 (HV)

Thanks prc,

I understand that the IEEE arrangement matches that for IEC but is opposite to DIN 42402 (quoted by ABB Manual),any reason why?

RE: Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

I dont know which edition of ABB switchgear nmanual that you are referring to. As per fig 12.3 of manual the markings are exactly as per IEC that I mentioned above and not as reported by you.IEC and IEEE arrangements are exactly opposite as I mentioned above.

RE: Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

Thank you for posting the copies.I was going to post a sketch.Unfortunately IEC is not clearly giving a plan view as indicated in IEEE and DIN. But let me confirm, in IEC world, the terminals are arranged exactly as given in DIN.ABB hanbook also confirms this.
Hence my statement that IEC arrangement is exactly opposite to ANSI/IEEE arrangement.Reason for it? There is nil, may be America always wants to be different. In Transformer engineering there are several similar issues where ANSI world follows exactly opposite conventions to that of IEC . Eg. In IEC, rating is the input MVA, IEEE it is the output rating, In IEC, distribution trfs have negative polarity, but in US it is positive polarity. GSUs are connected Yd 11 in Europe, US goes for Yd1.In US transformer rating is ONAN rating, rest of the world maximum ONAF rating etc, etc.

Thanks for explaining, I thought the connections shown in IEC is the phase arrangement? if so, it will be exactly similar to IEEE, do you know where to confirm the IEC arrangement?

RE: Power Transformer Phase Arrangement

Unfortunately none of IEC standards refer to terminal lay out arrangement. But universally in IEC world, the practice is as mentioned in DIN.

This makes it difficult to convince the transformer manufacturer to change his proposed phase arrangement to IEC (he shows it as per IEEE)
