Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

(OP)
Hello all,
I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to a section to study where the ASME code sect VIII div 1 talks about helicoil inserts and allowable strengths? I haven't been able to find any references so far from the UG section of the code. Thanks!

RE: Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

rman487, you won't find any mention of threaded inserts in Sec VIII, Div. 1. Their design and use will fall under "good engineering practice". Strengths likely can be calculated by usual methods. See "machinerys' Handbook" for example.

Regards,

Mike

SnTMan,
Alright, thanks! So all of ASME's code won't pertain to this question?

RE: Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

rman487-

As SnTMan pointed out, Section VIII won't get into helical insert issues - after all, Section VIII is a new construction code (only) and one would not be expected to use helical inserts in the controlled environment (hah!) of new construction.

You'll find a single three-sentence paragraph which addresss helical inserts in ASME PCC-2 Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping. Specifically, Article 3.3, paragraph 3.5 of the 2011 edition. I do not believe that this article is being changed in the 2013 2014 edition.
