Show multiple configurations in drawing

Show multiple configurations in drawing

Show multiple configurations in drawing

(OP)
There is a function in SolidWorks to show alternative part positions in a drawing, with the alternative position in dashed lines.

I would like to do a similar thing, but with a modified part (ie the original part is shown as dashed and the modified version solid, with the ability to dimension between the two).

A bit of googling hasn't brought anything up, if it's possible I would imagine I'd need configurations of the part and the ability to show both in the same drawing view.

As an example of the part in question, the original may be a length of pipe and the modified part would be the pipe after the end has been turned down in a lathe.

Does anyone know if this is something SolidWorks can do?

Thanks,
David

It seems to me you already have the answer; use configurations and the alternate position view.

The way I have handled this in the past is to put a sketch in the part that shows a dashed outline of the alternate position and then turn on the sketch in the appropriate drawing view.

RE: Show multiple configurations in drawing

If you want to show multiple configurations in multiple views, that's easy and you probably already know how to do that. If however you want oshow multiple configurations in a single view, that will require a sketch to be shown in that view. That sketch can be in the part or in the drawing view itself either one.

Thanks for the replies.

JMirisola - As far as I'm aware, alternate positions only works with parts in an assembly rather than different configurations of a single part.

As suggested I'll go with a sketch that can be shown in the drawing view, just thought I'd check in case there was a SW function I was missing :)

RE: Show multiple configurations in drawing

My bad. I completely glossed over where you mentioned this was a part.

You can create the different configurations and then bring multiple instances of the same view(s) into the drawing, changing the reference configuration as needed, changing the line font in the alternate view and overlaying one view on top of the other. Too much work, perhaps?

Umm, single-part assembly anyone? 2 configs of the assembly, one config referencing original and the other modified config of part.

We have a winner!!

Another way to do this (although not as eloquent as handleman's) is to create two views each using a different configuration. Then you align the views both horizontal and vertical (fixing them in place helps so they move accidentally).
