WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

(OP)
Is their any way we can avoid impact tests while qualifying welding procedures for EN 12952 steam boiler construction, in view of high temperature of the application? Reference standard EN 15614,Specification and qualification of welding procedures for metallic materials- Welding procedure test, specifies impact test. The test temperature is to be decided as per the application but for high temperature boiler application impact test does not seem to be relevant.

RE: WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

The cost of impact testing is negligible, and will demonstrate expected material toughness if the WPS is followed. If required by the code, as you have indicated, it would seem your options are limited: Comply with Code…or don’t…

Consiedering your application, high temperature boiler, impact testing is a cheap CYA should a failure occur.

Risk vs. reward.

RE: WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

They are probably considering the applied load at the hydrostatic test pressure/temperature. The Germans have been especially conscious of toughnes properties (impact testing) ever since the radio tower catastrophies of late 1960s/early 1970s.

RE: WPQR test for EN 12952 boiler construction

Never a good idea to go 'cheap' when qualifying a WPS. Each of your company's PQR/WPS's will outlast their corporate headquarters building. They can even be carried forward through a merger or aquisition. That pretty much makes them a capital item, and the most durable capitalizable item that your company will ever own.
