Noise Cancellation Technology help and understanding needed

(OP)
Hello I have this product i want to test to see if it would it work but need some help on if the theory i actually viable. I know how noise cancellation works in head phones by scanning the background noise and producing an anti clock phase. I would like to if this concept would work in say a house environment, or could be put on to an object which has a constant pitch and volume. Any help and knowledge is appreciated. Sorry if this may such a simple and easy answer.

RE: Noise Cancellation Technology help and understanding needed

Actually, you should be sorry for picking a rather difficult generalized problem. winky smile Headphone noise cancellation is relatively easy, in the sense that the correction only applies to the inch or so outside of your ear canal. That's infinitely easier that trying reduce the noise in a house, assuming that's what you were speaking to in the 2nd sentence. Objects that make noise such as washing machines are spatially extended, and different parts of the sound come from different parts of the object. There is no way to mathematically use a single compensation source to cancel noise from an extended source.

Thanks for your help, i just wanted to know if you it would be possible or not and I guess it isn't. And rather than a washing machine i was thinking or more like a quadcopter.

RE: Noise Cancellation Technology help and understanding needed

I have used external noise cancellation, and internal noise cancellation on cars. that is to say, we reduced the engine noise heard by the car's occupants, and by people outside the car. It can also be made to work on things like road noise in some cases.

There are all sorts of ifs and buts, unless you are willing to describe fully what you are trying to achieve then I'm not going to write a textbook.

Cheers
