AC and DC load break switch

AC and DC load break switch

AC and DC load break switch

(OP)
is it possible to use a 160A AC load break switch for opening a DC circuit with a current rating of 80 A?contacts are not serierd or paralleled for this purpose.
thanx.

RE: AC and DC load break switch

It is very doubtful that you could use the switch for DC service at that rating.  Contacts are normally severely derated for DC interrupting duty unless they have magnetic blowout coils or other means to assist the interruption.  If you want to see quite an arc, try interrupting 80 amps DC at 125VDC with contacts that are rated for AC.  It's usually pretty spectacular!

You may have to reduce the voltage to one half for the 80A dc load break switch operation.
