Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

(OP)
I have been reviewing some welder qualifications for a small bore 2" piping job sch 80 , the wall thickness is .218 .. The welder "tickets" shows qualification of .250 - max from 1" OD and up . My question is does he qualify to weld on this material as it is thinner than the material he qualified on ? I have heard conflicting reports that there is no minimum deposit thickness qualifications . I am struggleing to find a clear answer in ASME IX. any help or clarity would be appreciated.

RE: Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

There is no minimum thickness for welder performance qualification, as described in QW-452. In other words the welder is qualified to weld up to the thickness qualified.

RE: Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

ASME IX does not tell about minimum qualified thickness for welder/ welding operator as Welder is qualified upto .25 so he can weld .218 thickness. besides this you can not overlook diameter restrictions of ASME IX for welder/ welding operators so check qualified Diameter ranges and compare it with job

RE: Section IX - welder qualifications MIN allowable to wall thickness

Qualification on the 0.218" wall pipe permits the welder to weld all thicknesses up to 0.436" wall, assuming the welding process was not the short-circuiting transfer mode of the GMAW process, in which case, he would be qualified to 1.1 x 0.218".
